Sonos Books

200+ professionally narrated audiobooks, 15 readers, family profiles, in-house DRM — built entirely in-house. We learned that content platforms need content volume we couldn’t sustain alone. Operations are paused; the lessons stayed.

What we built

Three ways to listen

Listen yourself

Psychological strain rose sharply after the pandemic. Research from the University of Toronto shows that our inner voice plays a pivotal role in self-control and calm decisions. Sonos was a journey into that inner voice.

Listen to others

When we’re open to learning from others, we inherit their wisdom alongside our own experience. History, biography and autobiography on Sonos turned other people’s lifetimes into shortcuts.

Listen together

Like Netflix for audiobooks — four users on one account. A library built for everyone, from young children to busy new parents. Subscription pricing made learning accessible, affordable and inclusive.

The lesson

What we learned

Content platforms need content volume. We built the technology entirely ourselves — the DRM, the player, the subscription engine. What we couldn’t manufacture was the depth of a catalogue that keeps listeners subscribed month after month. That insight now shapes every new venture: distribution and content depth come before the platform.
